Indiana School for the Blind & Visually Impaired (ISBVI)

The School is nationally and internationally recognized for its excellence and best practices in educating children and young adults who are blind or have low vision. The School is a critical resource for Indiana’s children who are blind or have low vision and the teachers, parents, and caregivers who work with them. Every year, we educate hundreds of children and young adults ranging from 3 to 22 years old and living in all parts of Indiana, many of whom, due to severe or multiple disabilities, other schools in the state have difficulty serving or cannot serve.

About the Job

**Successful candidates will begin employment in August at the start of the 2019-2020 school year.**

The Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is seeking an Outreach Consultant to provide instruction to students who are blind or low vision in both core curriculum and expanded core curriculum.

A day in the life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Provide instruction based on acceptable practice that addresses each student's IEP goals and State standards where appropriate.
  • Plan and provide instruction in a classroom, school or community setting that addresses each student's IEP goals and state standards where appropriate.
  • Assess and document student progress and report progress to parents quarterly via IEP updates.
  • Supervise students to ensure health, safety and welfare.
  • Provide information to students in their appropriate communication.
  • Provide direct services and consults to students, families, and other agencies and professionals.
  • Assist in program developments.
  • Provide a strong liaison between local education agencies and ISBVI.
  • Plan and participate in professional developments.
  • Submit records documenting observations and recommendations in a timely and professional manner.
  • Other duties as assigned.
What we're looking for:
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in education, one or more subject areas, or 3 years’ experience in special education
  • Valid Teaching license through the State of Indiana
  • Must have blind and low vision certification 
Difficulty of Work:

May require long periods of standing.  Will require knowledge of a wide array of strategies for dealing with individual and specific student needs.  May require physical intervention in the case of an emergency or when dealing with issues of health, safety and welfare. Travel/driving is required, with possible overnight travel.

If this is an Intermittent position, the position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
