About Madison State Hospital

Madison State Hospital is located in a rural area overlooking the Ohio River and has served the citizens of Indiana for over a century, opening its door to patients in 1910. As part of the Indiana State Psychiatric Hospital Network, our staff offer comprehensive treatment programs utilizing a Trauma Informed Care approach. Patients admitted for treatment can participate in individual therapy, medication therapy, family therapy, psycho-educational groups, rehabilitation therapies, chaplain services, co-occurring programming, as well as employment opportunities. Unit-based programming is augmented with campus-wide specialty groups. MSH has been a state leader in evidenced-based medication prescribing to both reduce the risks associated with polypharmacy and optimize clinical outcomes. The hospital clinical and medical leadership collaborate with the unit treatment teams to provide the most contemporary and comprehensive care possible.

 

Role Overview

In this position, you will have an important role in helping patients manage their mental health conditions and improve their quality of life.  Your duties and responsibilities are varied and complex, requiring extensive training and expertise in the field of mental health. They include: 

  • Diagnosing mental health disorders and evaluating patients to determine if they have a mental health disorder, and if so, which specific condition they have.
  • Prescribing medication.  You will work with patients to determine the most appropriate medication and dosage, monitor patients for side effects, and adjust medication as needed.
  • Managing and providing crisis intervention in situations.
  • Collaborating with other healthcare professionals. You will work closely with other healthcare professionals, such as primary care physicians, psychologists, and social workers, to ensure that patients receive comprehensive care.
  • Forensic evaluations and court commitment hearings.
  • Host preceptor medical internships.
  • Collaborative agreements with Nurse Practitioners.
  • On-call after hours coverage responsibilities.

 

  • On-call pay rate at up to $750 per weekday shift and up to $1200 per weekend or holiday shift.

 

 

Salary Statement

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $193,102.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Prescribe and administer primary psychiatric care to patients including completing assessments, prescribing medications, and providing patient/family education.  
  • Serve in a leadership capacity on treatment teams and takes an active role in providing appropriate clinical direction in the development of individual treatment plans.  
  • Gather and maintain patient information and records, including social or medical history obtained from patients, relatives, or other professionals. 
  • Collaborate with physicians, psychologists, social workers, psychiatric nurses, or other professionals to discuss treatment plans and progress. 
  • Analyze and evaluate patient data or test findings to diagnose nature or extent of mental disorder. 
  • Complete continuing educational opportunities to improve the field of medicine and comply with the medical-professional staff bylaws, rules and regulations.  
  • Serve on selected standing hospital committees and demonstrates active participation, providing input within areas of competence.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment: 

  • Board-Certified General Psychiatry MD/DO.
  • Completion of an accredited residency training program in Psychiatry.   
  • Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the state of Indiana as issued by the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency.  
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions. 
  • Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders. 
  • The ability to demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that enables him/her to establish and maintain professional relationships with patients, families, & members of health care teams.  
  • The ability to demonstrate both an understanding of the contexts and systems in which health care is provided.  

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
